What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as microneedling, is a cosmetic treatment that creates micro-punctures in the skin to stimulate the self-repair process and increase the transepidermal absorption of rejuvenating active ingredients, such as growth factors, hyaluronic acid and vitamins.

Using devices equipped with microneedles, channels are created in the epidermis, which activate the skin’s natural repair mechanisms. Thanks to these small holes, which close spontaneously after ten minutes, the specialist performing the treatment achieves better penetration of active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and vitamins. But the main effect of microneedling is that it induces growth factors and stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin, thus giving a visible rejuvenation effect

DURING THE TREATMENT

The needles used in microneedling for skin remodelling purposes have the appropriate length – corresponding to the depth of the dermis. This is where fibroblasts and a network of blood vessels (which have a significant impact on regeneration processes) are located. The depth of the individual layers of skin varies depending on the location on the body. For example, the epidermis reaches a maximum depth of 0.05 mm on the eyelids and 1.5 mm on the hands and feet; the thickness of the dermis ranges from 0.3 mm on the eyelids to 3 mm on the back. When performing the procedure, we select the appropriate length of needles, e.g. in the lower eyelid area we use needles with a maximum length of 0.25 mm.

SKIN AFTER MICRONEEDLE MESOTHERAPY

After the treatment, the skin is red and swollen, but these symptoms disappear within 2-3 days. The microneedling treatment should be repeated approximately every 2-4 weeks and performed in a series of 4-6 treatments. The skin remodeling process begins after the treatment and lasts up to several weeks, so the final effect can be seen after 3-6 months.

WHEN TO USE MICRONEEDLING?

During the procedure, micro-bleeding of the skin is visible, caused by injury to the plexus of vessels located under the network of capillaries in the papillary layer.

In the first phase, growth factors are released, including: fibroblast growth factor FGF, transforming growth factor TGF, platelet growth factor PDGF, epidermal growth factor EGF. They are important in the processes of tissue regeneration and reconstruction:

Stimulate fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin
Stimulate the formation of intercellular matrix components, including: hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans
Accelerate the division, development and differentiation of skin cells
Improve microcirculation
Have a positive impact on the quality of intercellular connections

The second phase is intensive processes related to skin remodelling – multiplication of collagen and elastin, proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, formation of new capillaries. The final phase is the improvement of the structure and vascularization of the skin through tissue reconstruction.

CONTRAINDICATION

Allergy to the ingredients of the preparation
Pregnancy, breastfeeding period
Use of anticoagulants
Unstable diabetes
Tendency to form keloids - hypertrophic scars
Viral, bacterial, fungal infections
Very numerous moles in the treatment area
Cancer, post-cancer condition up to 5 years after completion of treatment
Poor ability to regenerate the skin
Haemophilia
Numerous widespread inflammations on the skin
Sensory disturbances
Deeply tanned skin
Very vascular skin
Applying medications in ointment to the treatment area
Acne vulgaris, phlegmon, cystic acne

Pre-Treatment Tips

Avoid Accutane in the six months prior to beginning your treatment sessions
Do not use topical agents that may increase the sensitivity of your skin such as retinoids, exfoliants, topical antibiotics or acids 5-7 days prior to your treatment
Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil for at least 3 days prior to your microneedling session. These will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical for your skin rejuvenation
Avoid IPL/Laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure, or sunburn for at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure
No waxing, or electrolysis to the area being treated for 5-7 days prior
Do not shave the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation. If there’s dense hair present in the treatment area, shave the day before you arrive for your appointment
If you’re prone to cold sores, take an antiviral agent for 2 days prior to and the day of the treatment
Avoid blood thinning agents for one week prior because bruising is a common side effect of microneedling

Post-Treatment

After the treatment, the skin should be strongly moisturised and oiled with regenerating creams or creams with ceramides, e.g. Dottore S.O.S, Avene Cicalfate regenerating cream, Stratia Liquid Gold or Alantan dermoline light cream
For 48 hours after the procedure, avoid heavily polluted places, physical activity and swimming pools
You should avoid the sauna for 7 days after the procedure
Cellulite reduction
Do not exfoliate for 7 days after the treatment
Sun exposure should be avoided for at least 7 days after the treatment
You should use a cream with a high sun protection factor for about a month after the procedure
